Silent Bob Strikes Southwest!

I am not a big fan of flying and have a love/ hate relationship with Southwest Airlines. I have traveled with them repeatedly in the past and am not enthralled, but lets be honest they are one of the few airlines I can afford to fly and I’ve had a few really bad experiences. Well earlier this week I found out that having a flight attendant throw my coat at me and then cram my laptop bag (with my mac in it) violently into the overhead compartment is not the worst thing that can happen when traveling with Southwest…
While listening to Kevin Smith’s weekly podcast, SModcast, I learned that you can actually be kicked off a plane for being too fat. I would suggest listening to Kevin’s account (#106) of the situation and then Natalie (#107), his fellow traveler’s story before you pass too much judgement based on the hype surrounding the situation. I can’t fathom the humiliation they suffered in that scenario, because really the heart of the matter is that it was a bad situation made worse by poor customer service. No matter what size you are, everyone has a right to their dignity; so thanks Kevin for using the platform you have to bring attention to the situation. Continue reading

Farewell McQueen

I am still in utter shock; today we lost a fashion icon. Alexander (Lee) McQueen was found dead in his London home this morning. The paramedics were called but he could not be resuscitated and currently there are rumors of suicide. The guardian.co.uk has more details about this tragic loss. I know his family and company have expressed their devastation and will be joined by the fashion industry and admirers in mourning the late designer. He has definitely been one of my favorite designers for years with his innovative clothing that took a risks like few other out there and always presented us with something new to ponder. I think Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue sums up my feelings on this sad sad day. “McQueen had influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs. At one level he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashion shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern-day genius whose gothic aesthetic was adopted by women the world over. His death is the hugest loss to anyone who knew him and for very many who didn’t.” Lee McQueen and his creative genius will be greatly missed.

6 More Weeks?

Oh Phil

Thanks to America’s most famous rodent (rivaled by those in Disney cartoons) it has been determined we’ll have 6 more weeks of winter (see the official decree below). I actually may believe the the little guy this year after the major snowstorm we just had this past weekend. If you want more information on the history behind the groundhog, check out this National Geographic article

Phil’s official forecast as read February 2nd, 2009 at sunrise at Gobbler’s Knob:

Hear Ye Hear Ye Hear Ye

On Gobbler’s Knob on this glorious Groundhog Day, February 2nd, 2010, Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators awoke to the call of President Bill Deeley and greeted his handlers, John Griffiths and Ben Hughes.

After casting a joyful eye towards thousands of his faithful followers, Phil proclaimed, “If you want to know next, you must read my text. As the sky shines bright above me, my shadow I see beside me. So six more weeks of winter it will be.”

It’s Tablet Day!

I have to confess that I’m a total Mac “fanboy” … er girl, so I am totally stoked that Steve Jobs is supposedly unveiling what is being called the most important thing he’s ever done – Yes, today the Mac Tablet is being unveiled (we hope). Apple is holding a product event out in San Francisco starting at 10:00am PT and it is rumored that this will include much anticipated Mac Tablet.  I will definitely be tuning in to the guys at TWIT.tv (I love you Leo) and checking in with MacWorld as the event plays out today.  I’m really interested to see what market they are catering this thing to and where the price point hits. Who’s ready for some shiny, new technology?

Unless you’ve been cut off from all news sources this week, you’ve heard about the devastating earth quake that rocked Haiti. I’ve been listening to the Rachel Maddow Show‘s thorough coverage of the situation as it unfolds. People are still trapped, in need of medical attention, without water, food, shelter and electricity. It is a critical situation down there that needs all the help we can give. Check out Rachel Maddow’s comprehensive list of organizations that you can donate to and help the people of Haiti during this time of great need. You can even text to donate to many organizations, including the Red Cross.

VOTE!

Today is an “off-year” election day here in Virginia, so if you are a registered resident, GO VOTE!  Though it may not seem as monumental as the election of 2008, we are still choosing a governor and filling many other seats in congress – meaning that Virgnia’s election today could really effect what gets done in Washington! The polls opened at 6am this morning and will close at 7pm, so there is plenty of time for you to get there. If you are not sure where your polling place is located, find out here. For more election information visit the Virginia State Board of Elections website.
